WHAT DOES IT MEAN BY WAL ‘ASR? “By time (1) Indeed, mankind is in loss (2) Except for those who have believed and done righteous deeds and advised each other to truth and advised each other to patience (3)” [Al-‘Asr 103: 1-3]
When Allah sworn an oath by something, we understand that the subject is very important and we should contemplate with more detail. In this chapter 103, Allah sworn an oath by TIME. The actual word in the original language is ‘ASR (عصر). There are few other words which indicate the same meaning, like WAQT (وقت), SA’AH (ساعة), ZAMAN (زمان) or DAHR (دهر) but He used the word ‘ASR.
In Arabic, the word ‘ASR literally means to wring out something or to squeeze until it release the juice [Mu’jam Maqayis al-Lughah by Ibn Faris]. That is why, in chapter 78 verse 14, Allah used that word to describe the cloud, which contains water and it then squeezed to pour rain!
So, when Allah says WAL ‘ASR, He is taking oath by our time, our age, our life, confirming that mankind is in total loss, except the one who wring and squeeze each of his or her moment in life to get the essence out of it.
Have you squeeze yourself?
Have you push yourself to the limit?
I take this verse as a reminder from my Creator for me to make to most of my balance ‘ASR!
